IOC expects decisions on Russian doping cases in November

Berlin (dpa) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expects a number of cases in the Russian doping scandal from the 2014 Sochi Winter Games to be resolved by the end of November, president Thomas Bach said Thursday.

Writing in an open letter to IOC members and international federations, Bach said he hopes "the IOC Executive Board will still be able to take a decision this year because none of us want this serious issue to overshadow" the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

An IOC commission, led by member Denis Oswald, is reviewing cases of alleged doping and manipulation of samples involving athletes at Sochi, prioritising those likely to compete next year.

However, while Oswald will rule on the athletes‘ results from Sochi, he will not determinte eligibility for Pyeongchang.

Joseph de Pencier, chief executive of the Institute of National Anti-Doping Agencies, has said Russia should be completely banned from the next Games, held February 9-25.

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) investigator Richard McLaren previously revealed institutional doping practices in Russia in two reports, including the tampering of samples at Sochi, which led to the formation of the Oswald commission.

The IOC stopped short of banning all Russians from the 2016 summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Another IOC task force, led by former Swiss Presidet Samuel Schmid, is also examining the broader aspects of the Russian scandal.
