IOC: US cyclist Tyler Hamilton loses 2004 Olympic gold

London (dpa) - American cyclist Tyler Hamilton has been stripped of time trial gold from the 2004 Games for blood doping and Russian Vyatcheslav Ekimov declared Olympic champion, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Friday.

Hamilton failed the doping test after the competition in Athens but was initially allowed to keep the medal because the B sample had been destroyed and could not be tested to confirm the original finding.

Hamilton admitted last year that he had used doping substances throughout his career and returned his medal to the US Anti-Doping Agency.

As a result, the IOC bumped the original second place finisher Ekimov to gold, while American Bobby Julich gets silver and Australian Michael Rogers is promoted to bronze.

The Russian Olympic federation had earlier appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a bid to get the medal awarded to Ekimov, but had been turned down in 2006. dpa adh bag mis
