IOC to step away from doping cases at Rio Olympic Games

Berlin (dpa) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is to step away from the process of handling doping cases from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro onwards, its executive board decided Tuesday.

"A new anti-doping division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will handle cases from the Olympic Games 2016 onwards," the IOC said in a statement following a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Previously doping cases at the Olympics were dealt with by an IOC disciplinary panel but will now go directly to a small CAS team on site, who are to hold hearings and issue rulings independently.

Any appeals by athletes against decisions, such as disqualification from events, would be heard by a separate CAS panel.

"This is a major step forward to make doping testing independent, following the decision of the IOC executive board three months ago after the proposal of the Olympic Summit," IOC president Thomas Bach said.

"It represents support for the IOC‘s zero tolerance policy in the fight against doping and in the protection of the clean athletes."

Russian athletes currently face missing out on the August 5-21 Games in Rio as their association is suspended by the governing body IAAF for systematic doping violations and corruption.

Kenya is also under investigation by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for breaches of its anti-doping code.

Kenya has been given until April 5 to put anti-doping legislation into place or face being declared non-compliant by WADA, which could lead to a ban on its athletes.
