IOC to propose nine new members, but not IAAF's Coe, FIFA's Infantino

London (dpa) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is set to elect nine new members into its ranks next month but the presidents of the ruling football body FIFA and athletics‘ IAAF, Gianni Infantino and Sebastian Coe, are not among them.

Past presidents Joseph Blatter (FIFA) and Lamine Diack (IAAF) were IOC members, just as their predecessors Joao Havelange and Primo Nebiolo, but the list of new members to be proposed by the executive board and published Friday did not include Infantino or Coe.

Blatter and Diack are under corruption investigation by Swiss and French authorities, and Infantino and Coe are in the process of cleaning up their powerful organizations.

The IOC gave no reason in the statement why the two were not proposed for election at next month‘s IOC Session in Lima.

But Coe - a two-time Olympic 800m champion and chief organizer of the London 2012 Games - said last week at a joint press conference with IOC president Thomas Bach he had asked not to be proposed because his the IAAF reform programme was his priority.

There has been speculation about a rift between Coe and Bach over the dealing with the Russian doping affair. The IAAF has banned the Russian federation and allowed only one of its athletes to compete at the Rio Games, while the IOC rejected a blanket ban.

Bach however said the IAAF was in special situation because it was directly impacted by the Russia issue, with Diack and others under corruption investigation in connection with the cover-up of positive doping tests.

The nine proposed new members include equestrian federation chief Ingmar de Vos, rowing federation president Jean-Christophe Rolland, Dominican Republic Olympic Committee chief Luis Mejia Oviedo and Oceania Olympic Committees vice-president Baklai Temen of Palau.

The IOC also said that Lee Kun Hee, who was instrumental in bringing the 2018 Winter Games to his native South Korea in Pyeongchang, would not stand for re-election for health reasons.
