IOC the latest to suspend recognition of SportAccord By John Bagratuni, dpa

Lausanne, Switzerland (dpa) - The International Olympic Committee has suspended its recognition of SportAccord and also stopped its funding of the umbrella organization, IOC spokesman Mark Adams said Sunday.

The decision was made at the day‘s executive board meeting and follows similar decision of various sports federations in connection with an all-out attack from now retired SportAccord chief Marius Vizer on the IOC and its president Thomas Bach.

"Like many members of SportAccord we are suspending our recognition and we will withhold our funding," a statement said.

Vizer said in April at the SportAccord convention in Sochi the IOC system was "expired, outdated, wrong, unfair and not at all transparent."

Leading sports federations such as athletics and others like the council of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) also quit SportAccord, which brings together Olympic and non-Olympic sport.

Vizer then said last month he would resign after in vain seeking a meeting with Bach who wanted to discuss the matter with his executive board first, with the meetings taking place Sunday and Monday.

The IOC now followed many others and also cut its direct funding given at 132,000 dollars per year.

Adams said SportAccord is "morally and legally" owned by its stakeholders such as the international sports federations (IFs), and that they must decide how the organization can continue.

"It is not for the IOC to make these decision but rather the stakeholders such as the IFs. They have to decide what future they see for the various sections of SportAccord," Adams said.

However, the IOC also said that it and the World Anti-Doping Agency would offer the same anti-doping services and advice to the IFs that SportAccord has offered.
