IOC still waiting to get Lance Armstrong's medal back

Buenos Aires (dpa) - Lance Armstrong is yet to return the bronze medal from the Sydney 2000 Games to the International Olympic Committee after being stripped of it in January for doping.

"What we are lacking sadly, but I hope we can still come to the result, is the medal as such," IOC juridical commission chairman Thomas Bach told the IOC Session in his report Monday.

Bach said that the IOC has asked Armstrong and the United States Olympic Committee to have the medal returned.

Armstrong was disqualified last year from all events 1999-2005, including seven Tour de France, titles by the governing body UCI after the United States Anti-Doping Agency found him guilty of systematic doping. He later confessed to substance abuse.

The IOC stripped him of the Olympic medal from the Sydney 2000 time trial on January 17 after the deadline for an appeal against the UCI ruling had passed, and asked for its return.

"We were legally in a comfortable position that we could refer to the UCI decision that was not appealed. They and USADA adressed all questions and the non-appealed decision declared all results nil and void," said Bach, adding that the IOC decision has also not been appealed.

Bach confirmed that the bronze medal will not be re-allocated, just as no new Tour winner 1999-2005 has been declared after the UCI ruling.

"Legally the case is closed for the IOC," Bach said.

The IOC was also hearing reports from its other commissions on Monday. The Session closes on Tuesday when a new IOC president is elected, with Bach rated frontrunner from six candidates to succeed Jacques Rogge.
