Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is in a healthy financial situation with assets of 3.89 billion dollars, IOC financial commission head Ser Miang Ng said on Tuesday.

Presenting the financial report to the IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro which then approved it, Ng said the IOC "is in a sound and strong financial position."

Overall assets rose by 22 per cent, while total liabilities are 2.48 billion dollars.

According to the financial report published after the IOC approval, the IOC expects income of 5.6 billion dollars during the period 2013-2016, more than 5 per cent higher than 2009-2012.

The majority of the income is from Olympic television rights, and marketing rights, around Olympic Games.

The IOC returns most of the money back to national Olympic committees and sports federations while retaining around 10 per cent for sports projects and its own expenditure.
