IOC expresses disappointment over CAS rulings on Russians

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday expressed disappointment that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) prevented them banning Russian athletes with previous doping offences from participating in the Rio Games.

"We are naturally disappointed that the Court of Arbitration for Sport considered our measures against doped athletes too tough. We of course accept their judgement," the IOC said in a brief statement.

The decision, just hours before Friday‘s opening ceremony in the Maracana stadium, means the final start list for the Games is still not confirmed.

On Thursday, the CAS had ruled in the cases of rowers Anastasia Karabelshikova and Ivan Podshivalov, and swimming world champion Yulia Efimova, that the IOC decision not ban Russians with expired doping sanctions "is unenforceable as it does not respect the athletes‘ right of natural justice."

Dealing with allegations of widespread and state-controlled doping in Russia made in a report by World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren, the IOC outlawed Russians with a doping past while leaving sports federations to determine the eligibility of Russians for Rio, subject to strict criteria and a final IOC decision.

The IOC confirmed the three cases dealt with by CAS Thursday are referred back to the sports federations for the other steps laid out by the IOC, which were declared legal by CAS Thursday.
