Berlin (dpa) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) wants to take doping controls out of the hands of sports organizations and have them carried out by an independent body, it said after a summit in Lausanne, Switzerland, Saturday.

"The Summit, following recommendation 15 of Olympic Agenda 2020, decided to make anti-doping testing independent from sports organizations," the statement said.

"The Summit requested WADA (the World Anti-Doping Agency) to study taking responsibility for testing as the global centre of competence in anti-doping."

IOC president Thomas Bach said: "We need credibility for our sports organizations as well as for our sports competitions.

"With regard to the credibility of sport and the protection of clean athletes, the Summit has taken a major step forward to making anti-doping testing independent from sports organizations."
