IOC announces pool of eligible Russian athletes for Olympics

Berlin (dpa) - The number of Russians who could compete as neutral athletes at next month‘s Winter Olympics has been reduced by 111 from 500 to 389, and not all of those will be eventually able to compete in Pyeongchang in the wake of a major doping affair.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Friday that its Invitation Review Panel and Olympic Athlete from Russia Implementation Group (OARIG) has established "a pool of clean athletes" eligible to compete.

The selection of the athletes at the February 9-25 Games in South Korea will be made on January 27 by an OAR Delegation Registration Meeting (DRM), after which the list of invited athletes will be published.

The statement said there will be additional drug tests and reanalysis of past tests for some athletes remaining in the pool.

The suspended Russian Olympic Committee can propose which of the clean athletes can fill the earned quota places by sport, discipline and event, which will further reduce the number.

The Russian Olympic Committee was suspended by the IOC in connection with doping practices at the 2014 Games in Sochi, and almost 50 athletes handed Olympic life bans.

Of those left in the 2018 pool 80 per cent did not compete in Sochi, the IOC said, adding it "shows that this is a new generation of Russian athletes."
