In election debut, Macron's party won't contest 51 constituencies

Paris (dpa) - The party of newly elected President Emmanuel Macron will leave 51 of France‘s 577 constituencies uncontested, despite the tall order that it faces as a nascent movement trying to upgrade from zero seats into a parliamentary majority.

La Republique en Marche! made the announcement on Friday in Paris, as France gears up for parliamentary elections in June.

These follow a historic presidential poll that saw voters shun traditional parties in favour a Macron, a former Socialist minister who has remodelled himself as a centrist.

He is hoping for a majority for La Republique en Marche! so that he can push through an ambitious reform programme.

The new party had already said it would not stand a candidate against former Socialist premier Manuel Valls.

Neither would the former government‘s labour minister, Myriam El Khomri, have to face off against La Republique en Marche!, local media reported.

Prominent conservative politicians Thierry Solere and Xavier Bertrand have also been "spared" by Macron‘s party in the poll, according to news agency AFP.

Macron has sought to build a cabinet with candidates from either side of the political centre.

Meanwhile, National Front leader Marine Le Pen, who lost out to Macron in the presidential run-off, has said she will run for a seat in parliament in Henin-Beaumont, a hub of support for her far-right party in northern France.

The election is to take place in two rounds on June 11 and 18. The deadline for registering as a candidate was Friday.
