Budapest (dpa) - Hungarian Premier Viktor Orban, currently attending the Rio Olympics, put in a word for Budapest‘s bid to host the 2024 summer games, promising a compact venue that would make "one large Olympic park" of Hungary‘s capital city.

In remarks reported Saturday by the Hungarian news agency MTI, Orban told a gathering at the Hungary House that the 27 Olympic venues would be found in two zones which at most would be just six kilometres from downtown Budapest.

"The entire Hungarian capital would function as one large Olympic park," he said. "The entire Olympic Games would as a result become one gigantic sports festival."

Besides Budapest, three other cities - Los Angeles, Rome and Paris - are bidding for the 2024 Games. The International Olympic Committee will make its decision in September 2017.

Earlier in the week, the Budapest bid committee held a press conference in Rio to publicize the Hungarian capital‘s advantages as an Olympic venue.

The committee said that after three straight mega-cities - Beijing, London and Rio - the IOC should choose a medium-sized city promising a compact size, while also being the first-ever Olympics in Central Europe. Rome, Paris and Los Angeles have already staged summer games.

Critics of the Budapest bid fear the huge costs entailed in building the Olympic facilities and infrastructure, arguing that the expense could prove too much for the small country‘s national economy.
