Human trafficker suspected of torture arrested in Italy

Rome (dpa) - A people smuggler who allegedly tortured refugees in Libya has been arrested in Italy after he was recognized by migrants there and nearly killed by a lynch mob, police said on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Ghanaian suspect is thought to have tortured and raped people at a camp in Libya, according to police in the Sicilian city of Agrigento.

The man tortured several of his victims during telephone conversations with their family members in a bid to extort money from them, the police statement said. His methods allegedly included the use of electric shocks and scalding with boiling water.

After arriving by boat on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa on March 5, he was recognized and attacked by migrants, and later taken into police custody.

The alleged campaign of abuse had taken place in four shipping containers in Libya in which around 800 people were held captive.

Most migrants heading from Africa to Europe set sail from Libya‘s largely lawless coastline in flimsy, overcrowded boats. Over 180,000 people survived the perilous sea route last year in order to reach Italy.
