How trade left its mark

Baths, smiths and a warm welcome along the Golden Road
Tradesmen and travelers spent days at a time on the road, in conditions that were often dusty or muddy and altogether unpleasant. Tired and drained they reached the towns and villages along the route with their packhorses laden with wares. In the early Middle Ages traders loaded their animals with goods and they themselves traipsed alongside.

As trade intensified and became more professional after the intervention of Charles IV carts were used more and more, sometimes provided by farmers who began to diversify but also by the forerunners of modern logistic companies.

Blooming trade
The owners of bars, taverns and coaching houses en route quickly caught on to this blooming trade: Innkeepers began to provide hearty meals and bed for the night, the blacksmiths busied themselves with the horses, oxen and donkeys and the baths drew in customers with offers of a hot bath, a massage and just about everything that one would expect of a modern health farm today, as far perhaps as offering ‘extra services’.

A typical example of one of these places of rest and relaxation is Pommelsbrunn, which was first documented in 1486 as catering for every weary traveler’s needs.
Sheep Street, Post Alley and Pig Way- street names tell us so much about the history of certain places. As the villages and towns first appeared between Nurnberg and Prague, there were of course roads joining the settlements. There are deep tracks still visible near the road between Amberg and Schmidmühlen that tell of the transport of coal and iron ore. There are also higher roads, like the one south of Kohlberg, which have been used for hundreds of years as alternative routes during bad weather because the water would drain off naturally.
