German media praise Hummels, Loew and others in win over France
Germany became the first team in the history of the World Cup to reach four consecutive semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over France Friday and the media praised the men who achieved the feat.

Berlin (dpa) - "Adieu, les Bleus!" screamed tabloid newspaper Bild in its online edition. "In 1982 and 1986 we defeated the "Grand Nation" at the World Cup. Now once more," it said.
Mats Hummels (C) of Germany celebrates with his teammates after scoring the 1-0 lead during the FIFA World Cup 2014 quarter final match between France and Germany at the Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 04 July 2014.

Bild Zeitung
Bild said that while the German team was now just two wins away from a fourth World Cup title, some concerns remain. Man of the match Mats Hummels was among those praised but Mesut Oezil was severely criticized.

"Only played within the team, never stood out," was Bild"s harsh view of the Arsenal playmaker. "Too little physicality, the weakest German in tackling," it added.

Die Welt
Die Welt newspaper said that "against France above all the German defence was impressive," again referring to the powerful Hummels at the heart of the back four.
Mathieu Valbuena (back C) of France in action against German players Philipp Lahm (front L) and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (R).

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who made a crucial save deep into injury time, was credited with holding onto the victory for the team.

The newspaper also praised Philipp Lahm"s return to his traditional role at right-back, comparing him favourable with the considerably less mobile Benedikt Hoewedes on the other flank. "Lahm shows Hoewedes was being a full-back is," it concluded.

Sueddeutsche Zeitung
But Lahm could only show his ability due to the decision of Joachim Loew to relocate him from his previous spot in midfield. This switch was broadly welcomed, with the Sueddeutsche newspaper crediting the coach.

"In the 1-0 win against France, Loew successfully managed to find a tight core and showed that he can overcome his tactical principles," it said.

11 Freunde
Meanwhile, football culture magazine 11 Freunde made a favourable comparison between past and present German teams:

"With a new line up and old self-confidence, the team of coach Loew moved into the semi-finals of the World Cup in Brazil 60 years to the day of the "Wonder of Berne" (when Germany won its first World Cup against Hungary)."
