Paris (dpa) - French President Francois Hollande called a meeting of his security cabinet on Friday, the morning after a policeman was shot on the Champs-Elysees, one of the French capital‘s biggest tourist attractions.

The Islamic State extremist group claimed responsibility for the shooting, which came three days before the country‘s presidential election.

Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and Interior Minster Matthias Felk were among the key officials at the meeting, according to a tweet from the president‘s office.

Islamic State‘s Amaq news outlet said that the perpetrator, whose alias suggested he was from Belgium, was a member of the group.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said on Thursday that the attacker had been identified though he refused to give any further details, saying investigators wanted to determine whether he had any accomplices.

The attacker pulled up beside a police car on the central Paris avenue and opened fire, killing one of the officers in the vehicle, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

He then tried to escape on foot, still firing, and injured another two officers seriously before being shot dead himself. A foreign tourist also suffered minor injuries.

France is due to hold the first round of its presidential election on Sunday.

Leading candidate Emmanuel Macron said he would cancel his appearances in Rouen and Arras in the north of the country following the attack.
