The first documented mention of Hall dates back to 1256. Since the 13th century the salt mine in the Halltal north of Hall formed the main industry of the town and its surroundings. The importance of the salt is also displayed in the coat of arms showing to lions holding a cask of salt. The salt was exported to Switzerland and some regions in Germany. In 1303 Hall became a town and in 1477 it got the right of coinage.

The town used to be called "Solbad Hall" from 1938 to 1974. It was the birthplace of the Jesuit astronomer Christoph Grienberger and Italian diving Olympic champion Klaus Dibiasi.
