Visitors to Franconia can enjoy the ‘Mastersinger of Nuremberg’ even without being a fan of the Wagner opera. Since 1976, the year commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death Chief Master Singer Hans Sachs, there is an annual music festival for singers, musicians, and bands on the last weekend of June with performances all over the town. www.bardentreffen.de

Travelers wanting more traditional folk theatre should visit the Basaltheater Parkstein, Burgfestspielen Leuchtenberg, or perhaps the Upper Palatinate Theatre in the Freilichtmuseum (part of the open air museum) in Neusath-Perschen or the Bärnauer Festspielen. Jazz Across Borders: Long before the iron curtain came down, the jazz bars and cellars of Prague were considered to be the cultural heirs of the New Orleans jazz scene. Today, a group sponsored by Pilsner ‘Jazz Bez Hranic’ (Jazz Across Borders) goes about continuing the tradition. The concerts are set up by the driving force of the organization Dr Ivan Slabý, in Plzeň, in the Bavarian Bohemian Culture Centre in Schönsee, in Rokycany and Klatovy. New venues are always welcome.
