Golfer Kaymer gets teary eyed, inspired about Olympics

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - German golfer Martin Kaymer admitted on Monday that just being at the Olympics leaves him teary eyed and inspired while also looking past some of the smaller issues.

"You almost get tears in your eyes when the national anthem is played," the 31-year-old golfer said, reflecting back at the Olympic Ceremony.

"Just the magnitude of it all, it‘s a little difficult to really process all the impressions. When you lay in bed at night, you have a lot of nice memories in your head."

The two-time Major champion, who starts competing on Thursday, said he loves the atmosphere in the Olympic Village.

"I think it‘s great just sitting in the canteen or the fitness centre and looking at the bodies of the different athletes. When you look at the rugby players, you have to ask yourself what you do in the gym.

"Then you have the track and field athletes who swing their legs over their heads. It is so inspiring for me."

Kaymer said he does not have an issue with the sometimes sparse accommodations for the athletes.

"Okay, the clothes are laying on the floor and the water is not always warm. But that is also really good for the circulation. You really can get grounded here," said Kaymer, who will golf with top-seeded American Bubba Watson and India‘s Anirban Lahiri on Thursday.
