New York (dpa) - German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel advocated a stronger United Nations on Tuesday as world leaders addressed a host of global threat and challenges at the UN General Assembly.

"Certainly we need more United Nations and not less," Gabriel said before flying to New York.

"The values of the charter of the United Nations, the cooperation of all those under the aegis of the United Nations, is perhaps more important than ever in these times of crises and conflicts," he added.

Gabriel‘s departure came as UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump gave speeches mapping out their visions for global diplomacy in the face of the nuclear threat from North Korea, migration crises and other world issues.

Trump stressed the importance of nation-states acting in the interest of their own people, while Guterres and Macron pushed for greater solidarity.

The German foreign minister is set to give a speech at the assembly of the UN‘s 193 member states on Thursday. Gabriel is also expected to hold various discussions on the sidelines of the summit.

Gabriel spoke of a duty that applied particularly to modern Germany "to campaign for an easing of tensions, for political dialogue, for diplomatic solutions, for solidarity, cooperation and peaceful exchange," adding that a strong UN was vital for nations to achieve this.
