Tallinn (dpa) - German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier began his trip to build relations in the Baltic nations on Tuesday with support for Estonian media in efforts to counter disinformation attempts from abroad.

Without outright naming Russia as a possible source of disinformation attempts, Steinmeier noted that Germany has supported Estonia in creating independent Russian-language media.

The three former Soviet republics along the Baltic Sea - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - have considerable Russian-speaking populations and have feared an incursion by Russia since it annexed part of Ukraine three years ago.

Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid welcomed Steinmeier with military honours. Steinmeier, travelling with his wife Elke Buedenbender, was scheduled to visit Latvia on Wednesday and Lithuania on Thursday and Friday.
