Berlin (dpa) - Germany‘s Social Democratic Party (SPD), the main challenger to Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s Christian Democrats (CDU), slipped further in the polls on Thursday, just three days ahead of national elections.

The latest survey, the so-called Politbarometer commissioned by broadcaster ZDF, showed the centre-left party‘s support slumping 1.5 percentage points on the previous week to 21.5 per cent, with Merkel‘s CDU and its Bavarian sister party maintaining a solid lead at 36 per cent.

Sunday‘s election looks set to bring the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party into national parliament for the first time. The anti-migration party climbed one percentage point in the latest ZDF poll to third place at 11 per cent.

The pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) came in fourth at 10 per cent, followed by the hard-left Die Linke party at 8.5 and the Greens at 8 per cent.

With Merkel‘s bid for a fourth term expected to be successful, speculation is focusing on possible coalition partners.

According to Thursday‘s polling data, her options are a continued grand coalition with the SPD or a three-way coalition between her conservative bloc, the FDP and the Greens.

All parties have ruled out working with the AfD.

ZDF stressed that its final pre-election poll was not a prediction, as only 63 per cent of voters are believed to have decided who they will vote for.

Merkel‘s personal popularity remained high, with 56 per cent of those polled saying they would like to see her re-elected. Only 32 per cent would prefer Martin Schulz, the SPD‘s top candidate, take on the role of chancellor.
