Germany's far-right AfD wants talks with al-Assad for refugee returns

Berlin (dpa) - The right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has called on the German government to immediately enter into talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the return of Syrian refugees.

The anti-migration party said Wednesday a "substantially improved" security situation in Syria, including recent successes in driving out Islamic State militants, should be taken as grounds to open dialogue on the return of refugees.

The AfD seized on discontent with German Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s migration policies to win 12.6 per cent of the vote in the country‘s September 24 election, becoming the first major right-wing party to enter the Bundestag since World War II.

Lawmakers from other parties reacted with head-shaking and consternation.

The AfD‘s "poisoned motion" was teeming with "cynicism and hypocrisy," Free Democratic Party lawmaker Stephan Thomae said.

"Either they have no idea about the issue or they want to stop at nothing," Social Democrat and former refugee Josip Juratovic said.

Lawmakers pointed out that members of the Syrian opposition continue to face "torment and murder" in the country, and that the expulsion of Islamic State from some locales did not imply that freedom prevails.
