Germany's far-right AfD touted as sole 'protective force' for gays

Berlin (dpa) - Homosexuals heading to the polls in Germany on Sunday ought to vote for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in order to protect themselves from abuse, according to one of the far-right party‘s leading candidates.

Alice Weidel, who, as a lesbian, has become the unexpected face of the socially conservative party‘s campaign, told online magazine Philosophia Perennis on Wednesday that the AfD is "the only real protective force for gays and lesbians in Germany."

Like other Islamophobic parties in Europe, the AfD claims that its policies protect sexual minorities from Muslim immigrants who reject same-sex relationships for religious reasons.

Weidel is currently raising two sons with her female partner and is often quizzed in interviews on whether the AfD‘s traditionalist family values also apply to her own life.

In its election manifesto, the AfD complains that "the number of traditional families in Germany has been receding for many years."

The party sees teaching about gay relationships and transsexuality in schools as "an impermissible attack on the natural development of our children and on the legally protected rights of parents to raise them."

"Being honest, the AfD does not seem at first glance to be the first port of call when considering the rights of homosexuals," Weidel told Philosophia Perennis.

However, her party stands "for law and order and for the preservation of our liberal Western culture and civilization," she said, adding that gay people would benefit from this.
