Coalition row: Merkel criticizes minister over weedkiller vote
Germany's agriculture minister voted against the government line in an EU vote over a controversial weedkiller, Chancellor Angela Merkel said, as she faces pressure from her potential coalition partners to fire him.

Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks says she had repeatedly made clear to Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt that Germany did not support glyphosate‘s continued use in the European Union. Schmidt nonetheless voted in favour of the motion in Brussels.

Hendricks is a Social Democrat (SPD) minister in Germany‘s caretaker government and has warned that the row may spoil efforts to form a grand coalition between her party and Merkel‘s conservative bloc.
