Germany removes lese-majesty law that let Erdogan sue comic

Berlin (dpa) - A little-used statute against insulting foreign heads of state has been removed from Germany‘s criminal code as of the start of 2018, Germany‘s upper house of parliament said Monday.

Paragraph 103 made the act of insulting foreign organs and representatives of foreign states subject to punishment in Germany of up to three years in prison.

Lawmakers in both houses of Germany‘s parliament approved the removal in the summer.

Germany‘s defamation law gained international attention in 2016, when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan lodged a legal complaint against German talkshow host Jan Boehmermann. He had recited a crude poem on broadcaster ZDF in which he said Erdogan watched child pornography and performed sex acts with animals.

The subsequent investigation prompted a heated debate about the limits of free speech in Germany.
