Berlin (dpa) - Germany has received 3,000 asylum applications from Turkey so far this year, according to figures published by the Funke media group Friday.

Since the failed coup attempt in Turkey on 15 July, 209 diplomats and 205 other officials have applied for asylum in Germany, according to the most recent figures, provided to Funke by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in Berlin.

The number of asylum applications from Turkey dipped to 488 in June, which is equivalent to the same level from a year earlier.

However, the figures have been increasing steadily for several years, from 1,800 in 2014, to 4,600 in 2015.

In 2016, Germany received around 5,700 asylum applications from Turkey, including around 4,400 from Turkish Kurds. Germany has a large Turkish population.

Turkey has been in a state of emergency since the military coup attempt which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed on US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, a former ally. Gulen denies the charges.

At least 50,000 people have been arrested so far in the crackdown on suspected political opponents and coup supporters.

Large numbers of Kurdish public officials have also been dismissed and parliamentarians of the pro-Kurdish Peoples‘ Democratic Party (HDP) have been arrested, while nearly all Kurdish media have been shut down.
