Berlin (dpa) - German unemployment rose more than forecast in April, the Federal Labour Office said Tuesday, adding to worries that Europe‘s biggest economy might have lost momentum in recent months.

The seasonally adjusted number of people out of work rose for the second consecutive month, climbing by 4,000 from last month to 2.94 million.

However, the jobless rate remained at 6.9 per cent.

Analysts had expected the number of people out of work to increase by 2,000 in April.

"Overall, the German labour market continues to be in good shape, however the current development is very subdued," said labour office chief Frank-Juergen Weise in releasing the data.

The adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.9 per cent, a level it has held since October, the labour office said.

In seasonally unadjusted terms, unemployment fell 78,000 to 3.02 million in April. dpa amc ar Author: Andrew McCathie
