German president cancels trip to Rio because of tooth operation

Berlin (dpa) - German President Joachim Gauck has on short notice cancelled plans to attend the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics on Friday because of a tooth problem.

Gauck needs a surgical intervention, his office announced in Berlin late Thursday.

More than 40 heads of state and government from around the world are expected to be at the ceremony late Friday, which will officially mark the opening of the Games.
