Berlin (dpa) - The German Army‘s missions in Iraq and Afghanistan are to be expanded and topped up with more troops after being approved in the German Parliament on Thursday.

In Iraq, the fight against the terrorist militia Islamic State will be expanded to the whole country. Until now the training mission has been limited to the country‘s northern Kurdish region. The total number of German soldiers to be involved in the Iraq mission will be 800.

In Afghanistan, the number of German troops will boosted from 980 to 1,300. It is the second such increase since NATO officially ended its operation in the country in 2013.

In two separate votes, a majority of German parliamentarians voted to approve the changes.
