Frankfurt (dpa) - As a result of the wave of refugees that came to Germany in 2016, net migration to the country was 500,000 in that year.

The final tally of immigration to and emigration from Germany for the year 2016 was released on Tuesday by the Federal Office of Statistics in the city of Wiesbaden.

The figures showed that more German citizens left the country than returned from abroad to live in the country again.

More than 1.8 million people moved to Germany in 2016, with over 1.7 million holding foreign passports. In the same year 1.3 million people left Germany.

Of the people arriving in Germany in 2016, 146,000 were German citizens, representing an increase of 25,000 on the previous year; at the same time 281,000 German citizens turned their backs on the land of their birth. More than 1 million people with foreign passports left Germany in the same 12-month period.

More than half of all immigrants to Germany - 51 per cent - had a passport from a European Union country, while 9 per cent came from other European countries.

Immigrants from Asia made up 26 per cent of the total, and Africans accounted for another 5 per cent.
