Berlin (dpa) - Germany‘s strong jobs market is helping to boost Angela Merkel‘s prospects of securing a fourth term as chancellor in next month‘s election with employment continuing to gain strength.

The number of people employed in Europe‘s biggest economy rose by 1.1 per cent or 475,000 to 44.2 million in the second quarter compared with the first three months of the year, the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) said on Thursday.

Employment was 1.5-per-cent higher or 664,000 compared with the second quarter of last year.

"Seasonal growth in employment is typical in the second quarter of a year due to the general increase in outdoor work in the spring," said Destatis.

While those in full-time work rose 1.8 per cent year on year in the second quarter, the numbers self-employed contracted by 0.6 per cent after steadily falling in recent years.

The German campaign for the September 24 election has entered its final stretch with Merkel as the clear favourite to win the ballot helped by the strong state of the nation‘s economy, opinion polls show.

Since the start of the year, data and key indicators have highlighted the strength of the German economy, with business confidence at a record level and the mood among consumers climbing to its highest point in 16 years.

Jobless data shows unemployment standing at an historic low of 5.7 per cent in July.
