German finance minister defends high costs as future investment

Berlin (dpa) - German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz defended on Thursday his government‘s budget plan, which has been criticized for its costs, saying it was an investment in the future of the country.

For example, expanding the number of full-day day care centres and schools is a decision that will help to fight the country‘s shortage of skilled labour by freeing up parents to work, Scholz said in a speech in front of Germany‘s lower house of parliament.

"All that‘s necessary for the sustainability of our society," Scholz said.

A day earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was criticized by the head of the free-market liberal Free Democrats (FDP) Christian Lindner for her party‘s plans to spend more on several issues.

In Merkel‘s address Wednesday, which outlined key topics the new government will address, she promised to invest in migration and provide more support for families, among other expenditures.

Scholz confirmed that he doesn‘t plan to take on new debt in order to finance the government‘s new plans.

Germany has reached its goal of creating no further debt since 2014, with the economy booming for several years in a row and unemployment at record lows.
