Berlin (dpa) - The far-right Pro Germany Citizens‘ Movement, or Pro Deutschland, has decided to disband and advise its members and supporters to join the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

The party‘s national convention in the western city of Wuppertal took the decision on Saturday, the party said, adding that all former members and local councillors should join the right-wing populist AfD, where they could pursue their political aims more effectively.

Pro Deutschland had its origins in the anti-Islam Pro Cologne movement, which mobilized to oppose the construction of a large mosque in that city in 2005 and managed to win seats on the city council.

The AfD made surprising gains in September‘s general election, winning nearly 13 per cent of the vote as almost all the major parties took a hit and entering the German lower house, the Bundestag, for the first time with 94 seats.
