Hamburg (dpa) - Former Olympic swimmer Sandra Voelker, who won one silver and two bronze medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, is now debt-free, but had to part with her medals in the process.

"Of course I am happy and relieved," Voelker told dpa on Thursday, after insolvency proceedings were concluded ahead of schedule.

The auctioning of Voelker‘s medals alone raised 67,500 euros (82,956 dollars), according to insolvency administrator Verena Vogt, who said that all the creditors agreed that Voelker was now free of the debts.

Voelker, 43, who is originally from the northern German city of Luebeck, filed for personal insolvency in 2013. The process would normally have continued until November 2019.
