Frankfurt (dpa) - German decathlete Michael Schrader, a world championship runner-up in 2013, will miss a second straight Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August with a severe knee injury.

Schrader, 28, told dpa Sunday he ruptured the cruciate ligament and other ligaments during pole vault practice Friday and will undergo surgery Monday.

Schrader won a silver at the 2013 worlds in Beijing and was seventh at last year‘s worlds in Beijing. He placed 10th at the 2008 Games in the Chinese capital, his only Olympic outing so far as he missed London 2012 for injury reasons ahead of the latest Rio setback.
