German conservatives want legal, police boost after Amri report

Berlin (dpa) - Germany‘s conservative bloc called Friday for more federal powers and increased police numbers in the wake of a damning report highlighting mistakes made by authorities in the leadup to December‘s deadly terrorist attack in Berlin.

Stephan Harbarth, the deputy parliamentary party leader for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), told Germany‘s Rhein-Neckar newspaper that the state needs more powers.

"Federalism reveals its limitations quickly when it comes fighting Islamic terrorism," Harbarth told the paper, in a story published Friday.

Specifically, Germany‘s Federal Criminal Police (BKA) and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) also needed to have their numbers boosted, he added.

The statements came after a final report issued by a special investigator on Thursday showed various police errors leading up to a terror attack in Berlin on December 19 by Islamist Anis Amri.

The Tunisian killed 12 people after driving a truck into a crowded Christmas market in the western part of the German capital, despite being known for a long time to police as a potential Islamist and drug dealer, plus a number of arrests.

Stephan Mayer, a lawmaker for the CSU focussing on domestic matters, demanded Friday an expansion of surveillance capabilities.

"The police and justice authorities in the relevant states need to be better kitted out. It can‘t continue that highly dangerous people, like Amri, are not able to be observed in Berlin around the clock," he told the Passauer Neue Presse newspaper.
