German and Norwegian navies to expand cooperation

Kiel, Germany (dpa) - The German and Norwegian navies plan to expand their cooperation, with Norway ordering four submarines from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) based in the far northern German port city of Kiel.

The sub order and one by the German navy for two identical vessels from the same shipyard were announced on Tuesday by German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen and her Norwegian counterpart Ine Marie Eriksen Soreide during a visit to Eckernfoerde naval base near Kiel.

"This partnership paves the way for long-term cooperation on new submarines, missiles and other marine defence equipment," Eriksen Soreide said in a statement.

Norway is a partner of choice, von der Leyen said, while Eriksen Soreide praised the partnership as exemplary for cooperation among other NATO member states.

The Norwegian parliament approved the purchase of the four submarines in June. The order is believed to be worth 41 billion Norwegian kroner (5.2 billion dollars).

The ministerial visit to Eckernfoerde naval base included a tour of the submarine training centre and simulator located there.

Eriksen Soreide then went on to visit the TKMS shipyard in Kiel.

The Norwegians are expected to take delivery of their submarines in 2025, the Germans in 2027. Germany currently has six submarines that are based out of Eckernfoerde.

Von der Leyen also announced a cash injection of 260 million euros to upgrade the harbour facility and accommodation at the naval base.

A further 400 jobs would be created on top of the 4,000 already employed at the base, she added.
