Gabriel sees no German mediation role in N Korea conflict

Berlin (dpa) - German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel sees no mediation role for Berlin in the conflict over North Korea‘s nuclear programme.

"I would advise caution regarding a German role," Gabriel, who is also vice chancellor, told dpa. "That is a conflict on the other side of the world. It would seem odd to people there if we offered to act as mediators," Gabriel said.

But the European Union could offer the expertise it gained in negotiations leading up to the 2015 Iranian nuclear agreement, he added.

Germany is one of the few countries that maintains an embassy in the North Korean capital Pyongyang.

However it did not take part in the six-party talks aimed at finding a solution to the nuclear stand-off with North Korea which broke down in 2009.

Tensions between North Korea and the US have ratcheted up in recent weeks, after Pyongyang announced that it could reach all of the US mainland with its intercontinental missiles.

The US began its annual joint military exercises with South Korea on Monday, despite renewed threats of aggression from Pyongyang.
