Paris (dpa) - Activists in France have offered to host a potential Catalan government in exile should the region‘s confrontation with Madrid worsens, France Bleu radio reported on Monday.

Robert Casanovas, president of the Committee for Self-Determination in North Catalonia, told the broadcaster that his group had a villa near Perpignan ready to host Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and was looking into renting other properties.

"It‘s a matter of being ready in case the situation deteriorates and there are arrests, before the border is closed," Casanovas said.

The Spanish Senate is on Friday expected to vote on a request from Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to dismiss Puigdemont‘s government and hold new regional elections, after the Catalan administration defied court rulings to hold a referendum on independence.

Perpignan and the surrounding Roussillon region are historically Catalan-speaking areas that were ceded to France in the 17th century.
