France 'will strike Syria' if the use of chemical weapons is proven

Paris (dpa) - France will conduct strikes in Syria if the use of chemical weapons against civilians is proven, President Emmanuel Macron warned Tuesday.

Last year, Macron said the use of chemical weapons would cross a "red line" resulting in airstrikes.

"I reaffirm the red line," Macron told journalists according the news agency AFP. "As soon as such proof is established, I will do what I said."

Activists and rescue workers have accused the Syrian government of once again using chemical weapons in the conflict, however Macron said French agencies had so far been unable to present him with any proof.

Macron said if the use of the prohibited weapons was established, strikes would be directed at locations where the chemical weapons are being transported or where they are being stored.

On Friday, in a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Macron raised concerns about the reported use of chlorine gas in the Syrian civil war.

Russia is an ally of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
