France pockets final judo gold medals on offer in Rio

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - French judo star Teddy Riner and his compatriot Emilie Andeol clinched the last judo gold medals available at the Rio Olympics on Friday, topping their heavyweight divisions.

It was the second consecutive Olympic gold medal for 27-year-old Riner, who has also eight world titles under his belt. The towering Frenchman has now won the last 58 bouts he has fought in European, world and Olympic competitions.

But Riner, who has struggled with injuries, said the Rio Games had been "very hard."

"Today I won. It‘s a big dream," he said. "I like my sport, I like the challenge, and I like the gold medal."

Japan‘s Hisayoshi Harasawa took silver after losing to Riner on penalties in the over 100 kilogram category, while Rafael Silva of Brazil and Or Sasson of Israel won bronze.

Andeol, 28, managed to pin down Cuba‘s Idalys Ortiz in overtime to take gold in her over 78kg category. It is the first time that Andeol is competing in the Olympics.

Bronze went to Japan‘s Kanae Yamabe and China‘s Yu Song.
