Seoul (dpa) - Former South Korean government minister Lee Hee Beom has been officially nominated to head the 2018 winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, the local organizing committee (POCOG) said Wednesday.

Lee, previously minister for trade, industry and energy, was nominated by 22 of the 23 members of the POCOG executive board with one member absent.

Previous committee leader Cho Yang Ho announced his resignation Tuesday, saying he needed to devote more time to his corporate responsibilities as chairman of the South Korean conglomerate Hanjin Group.

Lee‘s nomination will be ratified at the POCOG general assembly meeting on May 12 before being confirmed by the sports ministry.
