FIS fears loss of traditional events at Olympics

Szklarska Poreba, Poland (dpa) - The World Ski Federation (FIS) fears that a number of traditional events could be lost from future Olympic Games, governing body president Gian Franco Kasper said Tuesday.

One of the ski jumping hills, distance races in cross country skiing and the downhill and super-g in alpine skiing could be threatened due to financial reasons but Kasper believes they must be retained.

"They are the cradle of the Olympics and have existed for many decades," he told journalists at the Forum Nordicum in Szklarska Poreba, Poland.

The International Olympic Committee member Kasper has backed the recent decision to give the 2022 Winter Games to Beijing.

"China wants to host the best ever Winter Games, they are highly motivated and have the required money," he said. Concern over the distance from the city to the mountains was unfounded: "A fast train completes the distance in an hour."

Kasper acknowledged there could be a problem with the snow but said that with 200 ski resorts, the ski industry was ready to jump into the new Chinese market.
