Finland slams new video of hostage in Afghanistan as 'extortion'

Stockholm (dpa) - Finland has criticized a video clip posted on social media of a Finnish woman abducted in Afghanistan in May, saying it was part of an "extortion" attempt.

The Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Helsinki stood by its demand that the woman be freed immediately.

Finnish authorities urged media not to disseminate the clip or details of the case as it could harm her, and complicate efforts for her release.

The woman, aged 37, was kidnapped on May 20 in the Afghan capital, Kabul. She was working for Operation Agency, a Swedish non-government organization. A German woman and an Afghan security guard were killed in connection with the incident.

Another clip with the woman was released at the end of July - reportedly the first time she had made a public statement since May.

The uploaded clips were labelled "tools used in committing a crime."

The Finnish authorities said they would not comment on their efforts to secure the woman‘s release.

Operation Mercy runs community development and humanitarian aid projects in Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
