Rome (dpa) - More than 1.3 million cars with electrical issues that may result in engine stalling or accidental airbag explosions will be recalled, Italo-American carmaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) said Friday.

Some 566,000 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger saloons, Dodge Challenger coupes and Dodge Durango SUVs made in 2011-2014, and 2012-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs were fitted with alternators that may go awry in hot weather, FCA said in a statement.

The fault "may cause illumination of an instrument-cluster warning light and/or the presence of a burning odour or smoke. Customers who observe these warning signs should contact their dealers; continued vehicle use may result in engine stall," FCA said.

Some 442,000 cars sold in the United States, plus 30,000 sold in Canada, 8,000 sold in Mexico and 86,000 sold outside of North America will be fitted with new alternators. The new parts will be mailed to vehicle owners starting next month, the company indicated.

In addition, more than 770,000 Dodge Journey and Fiat Freemont crossovers made in 2011-2015 are at risk of a short-circuit that may trigger the deployment of the driver‘s airbag, turn on windscreen wipers and make some switches inoperable, FCA said.

About 363,000 of the affected vehicles were sold in the US, 120,000 in Canada, 54,000 in Mexico and 233,000 outside of North America.
