Report: German liberals want finance minister in Merkel coalition
Germany's liberal Free Democrats (FDP) want the role of finance minister if they enter a coalition with Chancellor Angela Merkel after the upcoming election, local media has quoted the party as saying.

Berlin (dpa) - "The FDP should not enter a government in which it cannot put forward the finance minister," FDP executive Alexander Hahn told tabloid newspaper Bild on Sunday. "Only in this way can key election promises such as better education financing and a reform of the tax system be guaranteed," he added.
Speaking at a special party conference, Christian Lindner said that he saw no chance of the Greens gaining third place behind the top two parties, the Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Social Democrats (SPD).

The role of finance minister is currently held by Wolfgang Schaeuble from Merkel‘s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU).

Michael Fuchs from the CDU told Bild that Schaeuble was an "excellent finance minister" who should retain the position after the election.

The FDP lost all of its seats in the last election in 2013 and has now a good chance of entering Germany‘s federal parliament after the election on September 24, as current polls indicate they have support ranging between nine and 10 per cent.

The battle for third place in Germany‘s elections is between the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) and the right-wing nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD), the FDP leader said Sunday, with just one week to go before the poll.

Speaking at a special party conference, Christian Lindner said that he saw no chance of the Greens gaining third place behind the top two parties, the Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Social Democrats (SPD).

The Greens are currently the fourth-biggest party in parliament.

The AfD, which he described as a party with "nationalist-authoritarian" ideals, need not be the leader of the opposition in parliament, Lindner said. If Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s CDU win and form another grand coalition with the SPD, then the FDP must step up as the main opposition voice, he said. If the CDU formed another type of coalition, then the SPD would be the main opposition, he argued.
