Sofia (dpa) - Hundreds of far-right nationalists carrying torches rallied in the Bulgarian capital Sofia on Saturday to honour a World War II general known for his support of Nazi Germany.

The annual "Lukov March" to honour former general and war minister Hristo Lukov, who was assassinated by communist partisans on February 13 1943, was held despite attempts by officials to ban it.

The city‘s mayor, Jordanka Fandakova from the centre-right GERB party, had banned the procession but was overruled by a court.

The Jewish World Congress, the United States, Bulgaria‘s government and the opposition socialists all condemned the march.

"General Hristo Lukov was a Nazi supporter who promoted hate and injustice, and is not someone deserving of veneration," the US Emabassy in Bulgaria said in a statement.

Lukov led the far-right wing Union of Bulgarian National Legions from the 1930s until his death and served as war minister from 1935 to 1938. The Kingdom of Bulgaria was an ally of Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1944.
