EXTRA UN chief: Time to revive Cold War precautions over Russian spy spat

New York (dpa) - Cold War-style precautions are "necessary again" as tensions between Russia and western nations continue to escalate, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Thursday.

Guterres said he was "very concerned" after the US, Britain and more than 20 countries expelled over 100 Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy on British soil, for which London has blamed the Kremlin.

The situation is "similar to a large extent to what we lived during the Cold War" and warrants the revival of "mechanisms of communication and control to avoid escalation and make sure things would not get out of control where tensions would rise," Guterres told reporters in New York.

During the Cold War a hotline was established between Washington and Moscow to allow direct communication between the administrations.

The comments came as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced the expulsion of 100 US diplomats in a tit-for-tat response to US expulsion of 100 Russian diplomats.
