Montreal (dpa) - Canada is "pleased" the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to approve the implementation of a free trade accord and a strategic partnership with Ottawa, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

"Today‘s vote is an exciting milestone on the way to bringing the benefits of these progressive free trade and partnership agreements to Canadians and Europeans," Trudeau said in a statement.

The Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) agreements set the stage for an even stronger relationship with the EU on a wide range of issues, including human rights, international peace and security, and the environment, Trudeau said.

Trudeau will become the first Canadian prime minister to address the European Parliament on Thursday.
